Collecting antiques is one of the most satisfying of hobbies. One of my favorite kinds of antiques that I like to collect is antique maps. Maps change often, due to political upheavals, world view conceptions that change, and perspective. There are maps of the holy land from the middle ages which show Jerusalem as the center of the world, and interesting perspective on the importance of that holy city to the Christians of Europe.

It is also fascinating to look at antique maps which are highly illuminated and can be considered works of art in their own right.  There is one map that I especially love. It is of Europe in the 1860s. It was published in Philadelphia and it is engraved and hand-colored. What I especially love about it is the intricate floral design flowing around the map as a frame. The border has a three-dimensional feel and helps lift the map up and out of its conventional subject and elevates it to a true work of art.
